Gold IRA Companies in Colorado

By Marcus Webb, Senior Editor, State Tax & Retirement Geography · CO · Wikidata Q1261

Federal rules treat every gold IRA the same — the real differences between states sit at the edges, and they are real money. On the way in: Colorado waives sales tax on qualifying bullion outright — purchases of any size go untaxed. On the way out: Colorado excludes the first $20,000 of qualified retirement income per taxpayer aged 59½+ from state tax.

Below you'll find the ten companies our desk rates, the sourcing behind each Colorado fact (state revenue publications, with check dates), and where approved storage sits. Where a rule is in flux, we say so on the page.

Buying bullion in Colorado: sales tax

Colorado exempts coins and precious metal bullion from state and state-administered local sales and use tax (DOR FYI Sales 60). Numismatic items and some collectibles stay taxable.

Watch: Self-collecting home-rule cities are not bound by the exemption (Westminster taxes non-monetized bullion), and HB26-1289 would repeal it — re-check before large orders.

Taking distributions in Colorado

Colorado taxes IRA distributions as ordinary income at a flat 4.40%; a pension/annuity exclusion — up to $20,000 ($24,000 for taxpayers 65+) — can shelter part of the distribution.

Storing IRA metals: Colorado options

IRS rules bar self-storage: your metals sit with an approved depository your custodian uses. Storage choice affects fees and logistics more than most buyers expect — here is what Colorado investors actually use:

Delaware Depository Service Company Wilmington, DE National default vault for Colorado IRA investors.
Brink's global vault networkunconfirmed Nationwide (regional vaults) Regional storage hubs; confirm current IRA storage with your custodian.
State snapshot The exemption covers state and state-administered local taxes — a handful of home-rule cities still tax bullion, the main caveat in an otherwise clean regime.
