Gold IRA Companies in Utah

By Marcus Webb, Senior Editor, State Tax & Retirement Geography · UT · Wikidata Q829

Federal rules treat every gold IRA the same — the real differences between states sit at the edges, and they are real money. On the way in: Utah waives sales tax on qualifying bullion outright — purchases of any size go untaxed. On the way out: Utah taxes IRA distributions as ordinary income, with no blanket retirement exclusion.

Below you'll find the ten companies our desk rates, the sourcing behind each Utah fact (state revenue publications, with check dates), and where approved storage sits. Where a rule is in flux, we say so on the page.

Buying bullion in Utah: sales tax

Utah exempts legal tender coins issued by any government, and bullion whose value depends primarily on precious metal content, from sales and use tax (Utah Code §59-12-104; Tax Commission rule R865-19S-86). Dealer guidance applies a ≥50% gold/silver/platinum content line for qualifying bullion.

Watch: Utah passed the first Legal Tender Act in 2011 and keeps extending the framework (HB 306, 2024) — the most sound-money-active state.
